Five Minutes Left…

“Five minutes left and we are so deep, we are in the hole. The chants from the faithful must sound like distant memories from above ground. Can we play you every week? They press. Are you Rhyl in disguise? They press. 90 minutes is up. We are Bangor. They score. Llandudno’s under 13s rise as one, their unbroken voices are shrill and incongruous and we flash back to schoolboy internationals. The last whistle blows. Dave Roberts collects his towel and redeems himself by giving us a discreet round of applause. Perhaps the noise of a crowd, any crowd, is a bonus when your own ‘fans’ are eating pork scratchings and quaffing cheap merlot 120 yards away in a plush portakabin.”
